Quality Information and Family Choice in Post-Acute Care
Status: developing research interests for doctoral study. No study data have been collected.
My experience
Through web and media projects for skilled nursing facilities in California, I have worked with administrators and care teams on how facilities present their services to families and referral partners. That experience motivates my interest in the information people use when making care decisions. My background also includes an MBA in Finance, an MS in Leadership & Organizational Development with a Healthcare Management concentration, and student representation in UC SHIP governance.
The question I want to study
How do families combine quality ratings, facility websites and referrals when choosing post-acute care, especially when location and available beds constrain their options?
I am interested in whether public-facing information helps people understand dimensions of care they value, and how ownership and local competition shape the information facilities provide.
A possible starting point
A descriptive study could compare information on facility websites with publicly available quality indicators in a defined geographic area. A coding framework could distinguish claims about services, staffing, resident experience and quality ratings. The first task would be to establish a reproducible sample and assess what each measure can and cannot tell us. Such a comparison would describe alignment; estimating effects on choices or care outcomes would require a separate research design.
Preparation and training goals
My experience offers practical context in service communication and organizational decision-making. I want doctoral training in health services research, statistics and research design to turn those observations into focused, testable questions. Professional relationships would not be treated as permission to use patient records or collect research data.
